A local woman, aged 83, has been awarded an ultimate care package from UK clothing retailer, Chums, in recognition of her tireless commitment to the community and her years of helping those with dementia.
Margaret Walker, from Leominster, has been explained as the kind of person who has a huge richness of spirit and generosity and makes Leominister all the richer for her contributions.
A born entertainer, she volunteers at her local nursing home,, bringing smiles and laughter to dementia patients. From playing the harp and piano to organising quizzes and singalongs, she carefully curates the sessions to allow the residents to join in and has even been mistaken for a resident herself!
She participates actively in her local church and is frequently spotted helping out at “messy church” (for children) or composing and performing in silly short plays that illustrate biblical tales.
The prize comes from a leading UK clothing retailer specifically designed for shoppers aged 60 and above who were on the lookout for unsung heroes within their local communities who may not have received the recognition they deserve.
Chums introduced the competition earlier this year and encouraged UK residents to submit nominations for an elderly person in their lives who they believed deserved recognition as an everyday hero and an example to the younger generation.
Paul Grey, Marketing Director of Chums, spoke about the competition and how the company wanted to give people the chance to show how much of a positive impact these community heroes have and to thank them for being so generous with their time, knowledge, and wit. The company also hopes to inspire others on the value of supporting your local community.
Each community hero Chums chose received the following as part of the package:
- A £100 Ryanair voucher
- Theatre tickets for 2
- A £100 Chums voucher
- A selection of other goodies, including chocolate
Pauline Williams, who nominated Margaret for this award, reportedly stated that Margaret is really ecstatic and a little ashamed to have won, especially because she was unaware that she had been nominated.
Pauline remarked, “Even the simplest acts of kindness can make a big difference. For instance, a lot of individuals avoid chatting to grieving people because they feel uncomfortable speaking to them for fear of saying anything inappropriate. But a simple conversation, an invitation to a dinner, or company on a walk can significantly improve someone’s day.”
In order to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary and a trip to the theatre, Margaret and her husband Michael intend to travel to the theatre together in October.
